An object of mass m1 =2.5 kg is moving with a speed v1i= 10 m/s on a straight frictionless track when it collides with another mass m2 = 5 kg that is at rest, i.e.v2i = 0 on the track as shown in Figure. After the collision, m1 and m2 stick together and move together.

a) Determine the total linear momentum before collision.

b) Determine the velocity of the object after collision.

esaal maglty expert answer is:

a) Determine the total linear momentum before collision. (Hint: pi = m1v1 + m2v2) (5 points).

pi = m1v1i + m2v2i

pi = 2.5 × 10 + 5 × 0

pi = 25 kgm/s✅

b) Determine the velocity of the object after collision. (Hint: V =m1

m1+ m2v1i ) (3 points).

V =2.5÷(2.5 + 5)× 10

V = 3.33 m/s✅

c) Determine the kinetic energy after collision. (Hint: Kf =0.5(m1 + m2)V^2)

(2 points).

Kf =0.5 (m1 + m2)V^2

Kf =0.5 (2.5+ + 5)3. 33^2

Kf = 41.58 J.✅
